WARSAW, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Former Poland coach Czeslaw Michniewicz has signed a contract with the Saudi Arabian football club Abha FC until June 2024.
"The management of Abha Football Club signed a contract with the Polish coach Czeslaw Michniewicz. We wish him success," the club wrote in their official statement on Wednesday.
Michniewicz returned to the bench after a 6-month break. During the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 53-year-old led Poland to the Round of 16, where Robert Lewandowski and his teammates lost to France 3-1. Then the Polish Football Association (PZPN) decided to sack Michniewicz due to his very defensive style of play.
"We saw what a great job he did at the FIFA World Cup. We are very satisfied that we hired Michniewicz. I'm sure his arrival is good news for the Saudi Professional League. I hope he can help us to build a strong team," Abha vice president Fahad Almofareh told Polish media on Wednesday.
The Pole's contract with Abha FC is valid until June 2024 with an option to extend for another year in the case of good results.
Last seaon, Abha FC finished 12th in the Saudi Professional League with 33 points.
"The president of the club Ahmed Al-Hodithy wants the team to move forward. We believe that under Michniewicz we will go in the right direction," Almofareh concluded. Enditem
