MADRID, June 18 (Xinhua) -- La Liga side Almeria have named Vicente Moreno as their new first team coach for the coming season.
Moreno replaces Joan Ferrer 'Rubi', who announced he was stepping down after two years in charge, just minutes after guiding the club to La Liga survival on a dramatic last day of the season.
The 48-year-old has signed an initial one-year contract which can be extended for a second season and joins after a season coaching Al-Shabab in Saudi Arabia.
Moreno is best known for leading Mallorca to two promotions from the third tier of the Spanish game to La Liga and then leading Espanyol back to promotion to the Spanish top-flight.
He has coached 74 games in La Liga with 19 wins, 16 draws and 39 defeats and his arrival at the club from the far southeast of Spain is slightly surprising, as Almeria had been expected to name former Rayo Vallecano boss Andoni Iraola as their new coach.
However, Iraola decided not to sign amid interest from clubs outside of Spain and he has been linked with Leeds United, Celtic FC and Olympique Marseilles.
Rayo are one of four La Liga clubs still to confirm their coach for the 2023-2024 campaign, along with Celta Vigo, Getafe and Cadiz, although Getafe and Cadiz are expected to offer new contracts to Jose Bordalas and Sergio Gonzalez after narrowly avoiding relegation last season. Enditem
