FAIZABAD, Afghanistan, June 21 (Xinhua) -- The first-ever communication signal tower has been installed in Wakhan, a remote area in Afghanistan's northern Badakhshan province, enabling locals to contact families and friends outside hometown, a local official said.

Local communication company Salaam Telecommunication Network has installed the signal tower antenna in the area, which would enable the people living in Wakhan and its vicinity to have access to 3G voice and data services, provincial director for information and culture Qari Maazudin Ahmadi told Xinhua on Wednesday.

"This is a good step towards development, and efforts are underway to do more for Wakhan and Pamir regions," the official added.

Incorporated in 2013, the Salaam Telecommunication Network runs under the flagship of the country's Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, providing telecom solutions across Afghanistan. Enditem
