JERUSALEM -- The Israeli government's 12-month budget deficit surged by 214 percent in two months, showed the figures issued Sunday by the finance ministry.

The deficit jumped from 4.9 billion shekels (1.33 billion U.S. dollars) in April to 10.7 billion shekels in May and to 15.4 billion shekels in June, the figures showed. (Israel-Budget Deficit)

COLOMBO -- At least 10 passengers were killed with over 30 injured when a bus travelling from Polonnaruwa in North Central Province to Kaththankudy in Eastern Sri Lanka toppled into a river on Sunday night, police said.

The bus collided with the Kotaleeya Bridge at Manampitiya, over the Mahaweli River before falling into the river, police spokesman Nihal Thalduwa said. (Sri Lanka-Accident)

MOGADISHU -- Forty al-Shabab militants were on Sunday killed by Somali National Army (SNA)'s elite forces, Danab, during a joint operation with regional and international forces in lower Juba region of southern Somalia, officials confirmed.

Somalia's Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur said the latest onslaught by joint forces' managed to neutralize the al-Shabab militants who were reorganizing in readiness for an attack against soft targets. (Somalia-al-Shabab)

BAGHDAD -- The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity has said Iraq lost 5,000 megawatts of electricity because of a shortage of gas supply by Iran, the official Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported Sunday.

The loss of nearly 5,000 megawatts caused by the decline in gas supplies from Iran and the gap of 10,000 megawatts because of insufficient national gas production have negatively affected the electricity supply to citizens, the ministry spokesman Ahmed Musa told INA. (Iran-Iraq-Gas Supply) Enditem
