Botafogo extend lead in Brazil's top flight

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Carlos Eduardo and Carlos Alberto struck late as leaders Botafogo secured their fifth straight win with a 2-0 away victory over Gremio in Brazil's Serie A on Sunday.

Eduardo opened the scoring with a low 74th-minute strike and Alberto doubled the lead by combining with Marlon Freitas before slotting a cool finish past Gabriel Grando two minutes from time.

The result at Arena do Gremio in Porto Alegre leaves Botafogo with 36 points from 14 games, 10 points clear of second-placed Flamengo.

Gremio are third in the 20-team standings with 26 points from 14 outings.

In Rio de Janeiro, German Cano and Matheus Martinelli struck first-half goals as Fluminense eased to a 2-0 home win over Internacional.

In other Brazilian top-flight fixtures on Sunday, Fortaleza won 1-0 at home to Athletico Paranaense, Bragantino were held to a goalless home draw by Sao Paulo and Santos prevailed 4-3 at home to Goias. Enditem
