JALALABAD, Afghanistan, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Two children have been killed and another injured as a landmine left over from past wars went off in east Afghanistan's Nangarhar province on Wednesday, a statement released by the provincial government said.

The innocent children, according to the statement, found a toy-like object and began playing with it, but the device exploded suddenly killing two on the spot and badly injuring another in Achin district of the province.

This is the second incident of its kind in war-torn Afghanistan recently. A similar blast in the Khwja Sabz Posh district of Faryab province claimed the lives of three children and injured three others 10 days ago.

Afghanistan reportedly is one of the worst landmine-contaminated countries in the world as dozens of people, mostly children, are killed and maimed every month due to blasts of unexploded ordnances left over from the past four decades of wars and civil strife. Enditem
