ALEXANDRIA, Egypt, July 16 (Xinhua) -- British pentathletes Chloe Johnson and Sebastian Forrest seized gold in the mixed relay on the final day of the 2023 Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) U17 World Championships in Egypt on Sunday.

The 16-year-olds delivered a remarkable performance across the five disciplines of the championship, which include fencing, obstacle, swimming, and laser run.

The British duo amassed a total of 1,607 points after dominating the fencing race and securing second place in the laser run, the competition's final stage.

They clinched third place in the obstacle race, a new addition by the UIPM as a substitute for horse riding. This change will be implemented in all future modern pentathlon competitions after the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

"The obstacle race is really fun. I really enjoy it. For me, I could do horse riding but I really love the obstacle," Johnson told Xinhua.

"I had more practice and I was ready for it mentally," she added, describing the organization of the events in Egypt as smooth and "generally very good."

Forrest said he performs better in relay than in individual competitions, a reason that led him to participate in relay races. "I did much better today than I have during the week," he said.

Egypt's mixed team of 12-year-old Farida Khalil and 17-year-old Omar Amer earned second place with 1,569 points.

Khalil, one of the competition's youngest pentathletes, won gold in the women's individual final on Saturday.

Egypt also clinched victories in the men's and women's team events on Saturday.

The bronze medal in the mixed team relay went to Hungary's Linda Haraszin and Marcell Hugo Gyurka, both aged 16, who tallied 1,544 points overall.

Hosted at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport in Alexandria, a Mediterranean city in Egypt, from July 10 to 16, the 2023 UIPM U17 World Championships drew over 200 athletes from around the world. Enditem
