KAMPALA, July 26 (Xinhua) -- The Ugandan Ministry of Health on Wednesday started distributing 4.6 million free mosquito nets in 25 districts of the country's Eastern and Western regions, as the government steps up efforts to curb malaria cases.
This is part of the Under the Net Malaria Campaign, under which the government will distribute up to 28.5 million mosquito nets this year and to have all citizens sleep under a mosquito net across the country, which has a population of about 47.25 million.
The campaign and the distribution exercise is being carried out smoothly, Nagundi Zowenah, health inspector at Mbale Municipal Council in Eastern Uganda, told Xinhua.
"We started with training and sensitizing the district, parish and village personnel who directly handle the distribution of mosquito nets in their area of operations," the inspector said.
According to the World Health Organization, Uganda has one of the world's highest malaria incidence rates, accounting for about 5 percent of all cases globally. Enditem
