FAIZABAD, Afghanistan, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorm and flash floods inflicted huge property damages as they washed away residential houses and farmlands in north Afghanistan's Badakhshan province on Sunday, local officials said Monday.

Heavy rains, which triggered destructive floods in the Raghistan district, destroyed 10 houses on Sunday afternoon, district governor Mawlawi Hayatullah Mohsin said.

Flash floods and rainfall had also destroyed scores of houses, gardens and hundreds of acres of farmlands in Yamgan, Kofab-e-Bala, Darwaz and Tashkan districts of Badakhshan province on Sunday evening, provincial director of Natural Disaster Management Authority Mawlawi Mohammad Akram Akbari said.

Heavy rains and floods claimed 32 lives in the eastern Wardak province a week ago.

According to Shafiullah Rahimi, spokesman for Natural Disaster Management Authority, about 700 people have lost their lives and more than 700 others were injured in natural disasters, including floods, over the past year in Afghanistan. Enditem
