BEIRUT, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- A truck belonging to Lebanon-based armed group Hezbollah overturned Wednesday evening in Kahale in Mount Lebanon, resulting in deadly clashes between Hezbollah members and residents of the Christian town.

The residents surrounded the overturned truck and cut off the road to prevent the army from removing it before verifying its content, prompting Hezbollah members to open fire, killing a resident and wounding another, local TV channels reported, adding that a Hezbollah member was also killed in the clashes.

Hezbollah said in a statement that after its truck, which was driving from Bekaa to Beirut, overturned near Kahale, several armed militiamen gathered at the site and attacked its members by throwing stones and then shooting, leading to the death of one of its members.

Meanwhile, the Aley department of the Lebanese Forces party, the main opponent of Hezbollah, said in another statement that a Kahale resident, identified as Fadi Youssef Bejjani, was killed by gunfire while trying to rescue the truck driver.

The statement also called on the army and security forces to arrest the shooters and confiscate the truck.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati followed up on the situation with Army Commander Joseph Aoun, calling for quick investigations to uncover the full circumstances of the incident and taking necessary measures to control the situation.

The prime minister urged all the parties concerned to keep restrained while affirming that the army is working to prevent further escalations. Enditem
