TOKYO, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Japan's weather agency said Thursday that the mercury reached 40 degrees centigrade in a central Japan city as scorching heat continues to grip the Japanese archipelago.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said that Thursday's high was 40 degrees in Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan, tying with this year's record high logged in Date City in Fukushima Prefecture on August 5.
Temperatures climbed to 39.6 degrees in Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture, and 39.3 degrees in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, said the JMA.
Weather officials said it was the first time that the temperature has topped 38 degrees in Aomori in the country's north since record-taking began.
The JMA warned that the heat will linger on Friday, with the day's high expected to hit 39 degrees in Tottori City, Toyooka City in Hyogo Prefecture and Nagaoka City in Niigata Prefecture. Enditem
