ANKARA, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Turkish security forces have killed a senior member of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in northern Iraq, the Turkish military said on Friday.

The senior PKK member Ferit Yuksel, code-named Serzan Meva, was "neutralized" in Türkiye's cross-border Operation Claw-Lock zone, the military said in a statement.

He was responsible for the group's operations in the Zagros Mountains of northern Iraq, it added.

Turkish authorities often use the term "neutralized" in their statements to imply "terrorists" in question surrendered or were killed or captured.

In April 2022, Türkiye launched Operation Claw-Lock in northern Iraq, targeting the PKK's hideouts in the Metina, Zap, and Avasin-Basyan regions near the Turkish border.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, and the European Union, has rebelled against the Turkish government for more than three decades. Enditem
