JERUSALEM, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Smoking causes the death of about 8,000 people in Israel every year, said an annual report published by the country's Ministry of Health on Tuesday.

The report, submitted to the Israeli parliament, presents the smoking situation in the country in 2022, with the aim to raise the issue to the public agenda and emphasize the need to combat smoking and its severe damages.

The report also showed that about 10 percent of the yearly deaths were non-smokers who were exposed to the smoke of others.

It stated that about a fifth of Israeli adults smoke, while 64.5 percent of non-smoking adults were exposed to environmental tobacco smoke last year.

Moreover, the number of fifth to tenth graders who smoked at least one cigarette per day increased to nine percent in 2022, compared to 4.8 percent in 2019 and six percent in 2021. Enditem
