ISLAMABAD, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan's interim Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Muhammad Sami Saeed said his country has been taking measures to effectively manage energy for sustainable development.

Energy plays a central role in the socioeconomic development of countries around the globe, and access to affordable energy service is the need of the hour to open new vistas of opportunities and prosperity for the people of Pakistan, the minister said while addressing a seminar on energy on Wednesday.

He said Pakistan has relied on imported oil, gas and coal to meet its energy needs over the years, burdening the foreign exchange reserves of the country, adding that integrated energy planning (IEP) by the government would help in tackling the energy crisis being faced by the country.

"Under the vision 2025, the project IEP was envisioned to make a centralized Energy Planning and Resource Centre that meets the demands of energy planning for the fast development in the world, and would help in achieving high industrial growth and an export-led economic base and save the foreign exchange reserves," he said.

The minister also called for a holistic approach to address energy-related challenges, providing affordable and sustainable energy supply. Enditem
