SANTIAGO, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Chilean government on Thursday declared an agricultural emergency in 16 communes of La Araucania in southern Chile, following heavy rains over the weekend, so as to accelerate aid delivery to affected farmers.
"We are assessing the impact of the weekend rains in the affected communities ... There is enough technical information to declare an agricultural emergency in 16 communes," Undersecretary of Agriculture Ignacia Fernandez said.
The official said the decree will allow for better and faster management of resources, while a registry of damage and losses of local farmers is underway.
She added that the affected areas are mainly involved in livestock breeding and small-scale family farming, which explains the urgency to provide assistance.
According to official reports, the rains caused flooding and overflowing of rivers, canals and tributaries, leading to road connectivity issues, crop losses and flooding of agricultural and livestock areas. Enditem
