MAIMANA, Afghanistan, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Two shepherds were killed as an unexploded mine left over from past wars went off in north Afghanistan's Faryab province, said a statement of the provincial directorate for information and culture on Tuesday.
The deadly incident took place on Monday evening in Gurziwan district when the teenage shepherds, 17 and 12, respectively, found the unexploded mine, but the device exploded suddenly, killing both on the spot, the statement asserted.
This is the second incident of its kind over the past week in war-ridden Afghanistan. In the previous incident, which occurred in the Garmsir district of the southern Helmand province on Sept. 18, two children were killed, and three others were injured.
Afghanistan is reportedly one of the most mine-contaminated countries, as the unexploded devices left over from more than four decades of war claim the lives of over a dozen people, mostly children, each month. Enditem
