AMMAN, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Jordan's Foreign Ministry sent an official letter of protest to the Israeli Embassy in Amman on Wednesday, condemning recent Israeli violations at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

The ministry's spokesperson Sofian Al-Qudah said in a statement that the letter denounced the incursions of "extremists, settlers, and members of the Israeli Knesset" into the compound under the protection of the Israeli police, and expressed concern about restrictions imposed on worshippers entering the mosque.

The letter emphasized the necessity for Israel to adhere to its obligations under international law, especially humanitarian law, concerning the occupied city of Jerusalem and its sanctities, particularly the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The spokesman called on the Israeli government to end all interference in the affairs of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and to respect the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its holy sites. He further warned that continued violations and assaults on the sanctities could lead to further escalation. Enditem
