COLOMBO, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Over 55,000 Sri Lankans have been affected by heavy rains and floods, the country's Disaster Management Center (DMC) said on Friday.

The victims belong to 13,627 families from 12 districts, with the majority coming from the country's most populous Western Province, the agency said.

Security forces have started rescue operations to assist people marooned by floods, especially in the Southern Province, DMC said.

Water levels of Kalu, Gin and Nilwala rivers are at spill levels, and the flood alert issued for these areas has been extended by another 24 hours, it said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology said thundershowers will occur in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Wayamba Provinces and Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.

Meteorologist Janaka Kumara said rains will subside from Saturday. Enditem
