ANKARA, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday warned of a spiral of violence if Israel attack the people in the Gaza Strip collectively and indiscriminately.

In a phone conversation with his Israeli counterpart Isaac Herzog, Erdogan said "any step that could harm the people of Gaza collectively and indiscriminately will further increase the suffering and spiral of violence in the region," the Turkish presidency said in a statement.

Erdogan added that it was necessary to act with common sense and that restoring peace as soon as possible is of great importance for the well-being of the entire region.

Erdogan said Türkiye would continue its efforts to end the conflicts and ensure permanent peace in the region, according to the statement.

Erdogan also had a phone call with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, during which the Turkish president said his country had been making every endeavor to end the clashes and ensure peace in the region, according to the Turkish presidency.

The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on Saturday launched a surprise attack on Israeli towns adjacent to the Gaza Strip, prompting Israel to launch retaliatory strikes on Gaza.

During the attack, Hamas militants broke through the security fence that separate the Gaza Strip from Israel and stormed nearby communities, killing and capturing Israelis.

Israel's state-owned Kan TV reported on Monday that the death toll from Hamas' attack on southern Israel rose to more than 900.

Meanwhile, at least 560 were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, according to figures released by the Palestinian Health Ministry. Enditem
