BEIRUT, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Lebanon's Hezbollah group said on Tuesday that it destroyed an Israeli armored vehicle stationed in northern Israel, near Lebanon's border.
The Shiite militant group said in a statement that its fighters targeted the vehicle with two guided missiles, wrecking it. The attack targeted an Israeli position in the Upper Galilee region, opposite the Lebanese village of Maroun al-Ras.
In response, Israeli artillery fired heavy phosphorus shells toward several towns in southwestern Lebanon, Lebanese military sources told Xinhua.
The unnamed sources added that Israeli helicopters launched multiple missile attacks on Hezbollah surveillance points on several occasions.
The tension on the Lebanese-Israeli border escalated after Hezbollah fired dozens of missiles toward military sites in Shebaa Farms, a disputed strip of land at the intersection of the Lebanese-Syrian border and the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, on Sunday morning in support of the attack launched by the Islamist Palestinian group Hamas on Saturday morning against Israel.
Tension intensified further on Monday after members of the Al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement, infiltrated northern Israel from Lebanon, engaging in clashes with Israeli forces. This prompted Israeli retaliatory strikes on several areas in southern Lebanon, killing three Hezbollah members.
In return, Hezbollah attacked the Israeli Pranit and Avivim barracks in northern Israel Monday evening with guided missiles and mortar shells.
On Tuesday morning, Israeli forces bombed with artillery shells the outskirts of Blida and Mays al-Jabal in southern Lebanon after a suspected attempt to infiltrate the Shebaa Farms. Enditem
