TEHRAN, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Iranian coastguards on Wednesday launched a large-scale naval drill in the waters off the southern port city of Bandar Abbas and Hormoz Island, the official news agency IRNA reported.

The drill, codenamed Mohammad Rasulullah 2 (Prophet Mohammad 2), was launched in a ceremony attended by Iran's police chief Ahmad Reza Radan and several military commanders, the report said.

Naval units from the southern provinces of Hormozgan and Bushehr, the southeastern port of Chabahar, and Qeshm island took part in the exercise, along with more than 77 different kinds of vessels, according to the report.

The drill is being staged in an area spanning 2,073 square kilometers and is aimed at countering invading vessels, piracy, and ships carrying smuggled goods. It will also improve the combat preparedness of the coastguards in the coastal provinces and beef up security in the country's southern waters, said the IRNA. Enditem
