Firefighter dies during water rescue drill in Japan's Niigata

TOKYO, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- A firefighter drowned at a beach in Kashiwazaki in Japan's Niigata prefecture during a water rescue training, according to local fire department.

Four people participated in a diving training last Friday, including the 26-year-old victim and his instructor. About 30 minutes into the training session, another trainee found the man unconscious in the water.

The firefighter was wearing a wetsuit and air cylinder at the time.

Police were investigating the cause of his death and the circumstances of the accident. Enditem
