BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Brunei, with over 100 new cases detected every year, Haji Mohd Isham, the Southeast Asian sultanate's Minister of Health said.
From 2002 to 2022, 1,814 cases of breast cancer were recorded. In 2022 alone, about 148 women in Brunei were diagnosed with breast cancer, and 35 died of the cancer in the same year, the minister was quoted as saying by the local Borneo Bulletin daily on Friday.
In conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which falls in October globally, the minister said breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death among women worldwide.
The minister said that in October 2019, the Ministry of Health introduced the breast cancer screening program. Since its launch, 12 percent, or approximately 5,445 women in Brunei, who meet the criteria have undergone screening.
"With the availability of facilities, such as the breast cancer screening program, I call on all citizens and residents of Brunei Darussalam, especially women who meet the criteria, to take the opportunity to undergo breast cancer screening for their own health," he added. Enditem
