COLOMBO, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's cabinet has approved a proposal to construct a floating solar photovoltaic power plant with a capacity of around 150-200 megawatts, a statement from the government's information department said on Tuesday.

The department, in its list detailing the cabinet decision taken at a meeting on Monday, said the generation of solar electricity using floating power plants is an appropriate remedy for countries with limited land area.

A higher potential is available to implement solar power generation projects on the surface of reservoirs under the Ceylon Electricity Board and Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority, the department said, noting that it has been recognized that a floating solar power voltage plant can be constructed within approximately 100 hectares of the Samanalawewa reservoir.
