JERUSALEM/GAZA/CAIRO -- Israeli troops continued ground operations in the Gaza Strip on Monday, as the death toll in the coastal enclave exceeds 8,300.

Also on Monday, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced in a statement that one Israeli soldier, who was abducted to the besieged Gaza Strip by Hamas on Oct. 7, was released. The IDF said previously that a total of 239 people were taken hostage during the Hamas attack. (Israel-Ground Operation)

SAN FRANCISCO -- An Alaska state trooper shot and killed a 21-year-old man who was seen holding an AK-style rifle outside a motel in Tok of the U.S. state of Alaska early Monday morning, according to officials.

Guests at the motel called 911 early in the morning to report a man trying to break into their room, Alaska state troopers said. (US-Alaska-Shooting-Trooper)

ABUJA -- At least 17 bodies have been recovered after a passenger boat capsized in Nigeria's eastern state of Taraba on Saturday, local officials said Monday.

Twelve people have been rescued so far from the incident, said Bashir Garga, head of operations for the National Emergency Management Agency in Taraba, adding that rescue operations are still ongoing. (Nigeria-Boat Capsize-Casualty)

KAMPALA -- Two pupils were killed after their dormitory caught fire at Kanoni Junior School in the southern Ugandan district of Masaka on Monday morning.

Jamada Wandera, the deputy police commander of the Greater Masaka Region, told Xinhua by phone that two students were killed in the fire before the fire brigade arrived at the scene. "We received a call from the school at 5:00 a.m. (local time) and immediately dispatched the fire brigade, who managed to put out the fire and rescue all the other children."
