PARIS, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- The year-on-year consumer price index (CPI) in France is expected to grow by just 4 percent in October, the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) said in its preliminary report on Tuesday.

This follows a 4.9 percent increase in September, INSEE said, explaining that the decrease in inflation is due to the slowdown over a year in the prices of energy and food.

According to INSEE, the increase in food prices in France in October should be around 7.7 percent, compared to 9.7 percent in September.

As for energy prices, the institute noted that the pace of energy prices should slow down from 11.9 percent in September to less than half (5.2 percent) in October. French Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire said France is "in the process of emerging from the inflationary crisis."

He also reaffirmed the government's objective of bringing the inflation rate down to under 4 percent by the end of 2023. Enditem
