LJUBLJANA, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Slovenia was preparing for possible floods and landslides on Thursday, after the Environment Agency issued a warning of heavy rain and strong winds for most of the country.
The warning comes less than three months after Slovenia suffered record floods in August, which killed six people and caused some 3 billion euros' (3.19 billion U.S. dollars) worth of damage, according to government estimates.
"In the evening and overnight we expect ... heavy rainfall and stormy gusts of wind," the agency warned on its website, adding that rivers will rise strongly in most of Slovenia.
Heavy rain could also trigger landslides, which have been a risk since the August floods. Residents in several villages are preparing to leave their homes quickly if necessary, while some roads are closed in case of flooding.
The civil protection units and the Slovenian army are on standby.
Some villages in the country have already been forced to evacuate permanently due to landslides after the August floods. (1 euro = 1.06 U.S. dollar) Enditem
