SEOUL, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- South Korea saw deaths from industrial accidents fall in the first nine months of this year following the tougher punishment on serious accidents, government data showed on Monday.

The number of deaths caused by industrial accidents was 459 in the January-September period, down 10.0 percent compared to the same period of last year, according to the Ministry of Employment and Labor.

It came after the serious accident punishment act took effect in January last year to impose imprisonment of more than one year or fines of up to 1 billion won (770,000 U.S. dollars) on employers who fail to prevent grave accidents at workplaces with more than 50 full-time workers.

The number of industrial accident deaths at workplaces with less than 50 full-time workers decreased by 41 to 267 in the nine-month period, while the figure for workplaces with more than 50 full-time workers slipped by 10 to 192.

The number of deaths in the construction industry shrank by 13 over the year to 240 in the January-September period, while the reading in the manufacturing sector retreated by 20 to 123. Enditem
