YAOUNDE, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least 20 people have been killed after gunmen, believed to be separatist fighters, attacked a civilian community in Cameroon's war-torn English-speaking region of Southwest, a government official said on Monday.
Viang Mekala, the prefect of the Manyu division of the region, said the attack took place at around 3:30 a.m. local time on Monday in the Egbekaw locality of Mamfe, the chief town of the division.
"The assessment we have just done shows that we have registered about 20 people who have been killed, about seven people injured and 10 houses burnt," Mekala told reporters while visiting the locality.
"We want to call on the population to remain calm. Search is being done so that those terrorists who have perpetrated this barbaric act should be arrested and prosecuted," Mekala added.
Cameroon's two Anglophone regions of Northwest and Southwest have been experiencing a separatist insurgency since 2017. Separatists want to create an independent nation in the regions. Enditem
