DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Commuter train service by the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) in Tanzania's port city of Dar es Salaam was disrupted on Monday following a locomotive engine failure.
TAZARA said in a statement that the locomotive engine failure on the Dar es Salaam commuter train service was indicative of the challenges that TAZARA currently faces.
"We are operating with limited capitalization, making it difficult to invest in new coaches and locomotives, as well as maintain our existing fleet," said the statement signed by Conrad Simuchile, TAZARA's head of public relations. "We always allocate our best available locomotives to our passenger trains to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted journey, and the occurrence of a locomotive failure on a passenger train is an unfortunate and rare event, which we always strive to prevent."
The TAZARA railway was constructed as a turnkey project between 1970 and 1975 through an interest-free loan from China, with commercial operations starting in July 1976, covering 1,860 kilometers from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to New Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia. Enditem
