KIEV, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday welcomed the recommendation by the European Commission to open negotiations with Ukraine on its European Union (EU) accession.

"This is a strong and historic step that paves the way to a stronger EU with Ukraine as its member," Zelensky wrote on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

Kiev looks forward to the decision of the European Council in December on whether to start membership talks with Ukraine, Zelensky said, stressing that the reform process in his country continues.

Earlier in the day, the European Commission recommended the European Council to launch accession negotiations with Ukraine and adopt negotiating frameworks once Ukraine has adopted certain key measures.

Ukraine was accepted as a candidate for EU membership in June 2022. Enditem
