DAMASCUS, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Six Islamic State (IS) militants were killed on Monday during Russian airstrikes on IS positions in the Syrian desert region east of the central province of Homs, a war monitor reported.

The Russian airstrikes hit the IS positions in the desert of the al-Sukhneh area and the vicinity of the Dubaiat gas field in the eastern countryside of Homs, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Four pro-Syrian government fighters were killed in clashes with IS militants in ground clashes in the same region, the observatory added.

According to the Britain-based watchdog group, a total of 544 people, including 37 IS members, 165 civilians, and 342 Syrian forces and pro-government fighters, were killed in the military showdown between the Syrian forces and IS militants in the desert region since the beginning of 2023.

Following its defeat in most of Syria in 2018, the IS militants fled to the desert region and launched attacks on roads connecting the provinces of Hama and Homs with the eastern province of Deir al-Zour. Enditem
