DHAKA -- Thousands of paramilitary troops have been deployed in parts of the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka and elsewhere, as the South Asian country's national polls are approaching.

Shariful Islam, public relations officer at Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) headquarters, told reporters Sunday that a total of 230 platoons (around 35 members in each platoon) of BGB troops have been deployed across the country. (Bangladesh-Election)

MAIMANA, Afghanistan -- Four people were killed with six others injured as a car plunged into a ravine in north Afghanistan's Faryab province on Sunday, provincial director for information and culture Shamsudin Mohammadi said.

The deadly accident took place in Bulcheragh district at around noon, killing four travelers including two children on the spot and injuring six others including three children and a woman, some of them in critical condition, the official said. (Afghanistan-Road Accident-Deaths)

COLOMBO -- The Sri Lankan police, Special Task Force (STF) and army jointly carried out a pre-dawn raid in the suburbs of Colombo on Sunday and arrested over 40 people, the police said.

The raid was carried out in Sinhapura, Wellampitiya, the area known for gang activities, and those arrested were in possession of drugs and weapons, police media spokesman Nihal Thalduwa said. (Sri Lanka-Raid-Arrests)
