OTTAWA, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Canadian government on Tuesday signed a contract to refurbish Canada's pressurized heavy-water reactor at a nuclear power plan in Romania.

Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development Mary Ng announced in a news release the signing of the deal of 750 million Canadian dollars (553 million U.S. dollars) at the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris.

According to the release, the three-way contract is between the Canadian Commercial Corporation, Societatea Națională Nuclearelectrica SA and AtkinsRéalis to support the work to extend the life of the Unit 1 Canada deuterium uranium (CANDU) reactor at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant in Romania.

Currently there are two CANDU nuclear reactors operating at Cernavoda and Romania plans to build two new CANDU nuclear reactors at Cernavoda, or units 3 and 4, which the Canadian government will provide up to 3 billion Canadian dollars (2.2 billion U.S. dollars) in export financing.

AtkinsRéalis, formerly SNC-Lavalin, is the exclusive licensee of the CANDU intellectual property portfolio and provides advisory and engineering services to other nuclear developers.

The company on Tuesday introduced the latest reactor, the CANDU MONARK, with the highest output of any CANDU technology at 1,000 MW.
