ISTANBUL, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Türkiye hosts an international military drill on mine warfare in the country's northwestern region, local media announced on Wednesday.

Nusret-2023 Invitation Drill kicked off Tuesday in the northwestern Canakkale province and the Gulf of Saros with the participation of 15 countries and 20 observer units from different countries, the Ihlas news agency said.

According to a post of the Turkish Defence Ministry on X, previously known as Twitter, the drill aims to train the participating commands in mine warfare planning and execution and improve the interoperability of mine warfare elements from different countries.

Speaking at a briefing about the drill on Wednesday, Mustafa Kaya, commander of Turkey's naval mine fleet, highlighted the dangers of mines at sea.

Kaya said that more than 200 mines alone left from World War I have been detected in the Turkish seas, and Türkiye has been taking the necessary measures to minimize the risks of the mines.

Italy, Greece, Spain, Croatia, the United States, Romania, and Saudi Arabia, as well as Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 2, are among the participants in the drill, which runs until Dec. 6. Enditem
