PHNOM PENH, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 3.3 million people in Cambodia had participated in the kingdom's plastic-free campaign within three months, the Ministry of Environment said in a news release on Friday.

From its launch on Sept. 1 to Nov. 30, the campaign under the slogan "Today, I Don't Use Plastics" had reached 7,129 schools, 173 factories, 69 communities and 28 pagodas, involving 3,294,459 individuals, the news release said, adding that the campaign is still going on.

Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth said the campaign aimed to combat the use of plastic bags, encouraging people to refuse to use plastic bags.

"The campaign will contribute to international endeavors to address the root cause of plastic pollution," he told Xinhua.

The Southeast Asian country produces around 56 million plastic bags per day, which equals 279 tons of plastic waste, according to the Ministry of Environment. Enditem
