NEW DELHI, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rainfall that hit India's southern city of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, Monday caused severe waterlogging across various parts.

The water inundated roads, railway tracks and the airport in the city. At some places, the water was seen flowing through the roads.

The inundation affected the free movement of vehicles and people.

Videos uploaded on social media showed vehicles moving through knee-deep water. One of the video clips showed an ambulance blaring siren moving through a flooded road.

Another video showed a train running on submerged tracks, and one more showed airport ground staff wading through the waterlogged airport with aeroplanes parked in it.

Officials attributed the torrential rains in Tamil Nadu to severe cyclonic storm Michaung, which is currently swirling over the Bay of Bengal and heading towards the Andhra coast.

Heavy rainfall was reported in north coastal Tamil Nadu, encompassing Thiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Nagapattinam, and Cuddalore districts.

In the wake of the heavy rains and waterlogging, authorities in Chennai and three adjoining districts announced the closure of schools, colleges and government offices, and urged private companies to allow their employees to work from home. Enditem
