CANBERRA, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Livestock, medical technology and horticulture have been identified as key artificial intelligence (AI) commercial opportunities for Australia by the national science agency.

A report published by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) on Wednesday calls for Australia to more efficiently turn its AI research into economic opportunities.

According to the report, which was commissioned by the CSIRO's National AI Centre and released during the country's first AI Month, Australia produces 1.6 percent of global AI research but only 0.2 percent of global AI patents.

Stela Solar, director of the National AI Centre, said in a media release that by applying its world-leading AI research to domestic and global challenges Australia could benefit significantly.

The report identified 31 domains where AI could be applied to help Australia become globally competitive, including livestock production, medical technology, horticulture, optometry and dermatology as the top five.

The report found that there are 544 AI companies in Australia, 396 of which have opened in the last 10 years, with most providing data services that optimize and develop AI capabilities. Enditem
