BERLIN, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- The share of electricity generated from renewable energies in Germany in the third quarter (Q3) of this year rose to 60.2 percent, significantly up from 44.4 percent a year ago, according to preliminary figures published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Wednesday.

With a share of 24.4 percent of total electricity generated, wind power continued to be the most important energy source in domestic electricity generation in Q3. The total amount of electric energy generated using wind increased by 16.2 percent compared to the same quarter last year.

Germany is seeking to cover 80 percent of its electricity demand with renewables by 2030. To reach this goal, the country needs to install an additional 145 gigawatts (GW) of wind energy and 215 GW of solar energy, according to the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.

Although the expansion of wind energy has picked up in recent years, the country is looking to miss its short-term targets. According to the Science Media Center Germany, the current pace would leave a gap of 3 GW in the coming year.

Solar power, on the other hand, is ahead of the targets. According to recent data assessments, the annual expansion goal of 9 GW of new capacity was met at the end of August.

Germany is sticking to its goal of phasing out coal by 2030. In 2022, coal was still the most important energy source for electricity generation but has now fallen behind wind power.

At the ongoing 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the German government is also pushing for an accelerated expansion of renewable energies and a rapid phase-out of fossil fuels in order to tackle the climate crisis.

"The technologies are there: wind power, photovoltaics, electric motors, green hydrogen," Chancellor Olaf Scholz said at COP28 earlier this week. "More gigawatts of renewable energy were connected to the grid in 2022 than ever before." Enditem
