ULAN BATOR, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- At least 21 families have lost their homes in the western Mongolian provinces of Khovd, Govi-Altai, Uvs and Bayan-Ulgii due to strong winds and dust storms, the National Emergency Management Agency said Thursday.
The strong winds and dust storms have been hitting the western parts of the country since Wednesday, and the wind speed has been reaching up to 43 meters per second, the agency said, adding that the storms have disrupted the power supply to eight soums (administrative subdivisions) of Uvs and Khovd provinces.
Starting Thursday, strong blizzards are expected to hit northern and central parts of the country, and dust storms are forecast to sweep through the southern Gobi provinces of Umnugovi, Dundgovi and Dornogovi, it said.
The volatile weather is expected to continue in the coming days across much of the Asian country, and the emergency agency warned the public, especially nomadic herders and drivers, to take extra precautions against possible disasters.
Mongolia has a harsh continental climate and unstable weather events are common in the country throughout the year. Enditem
