BRUSSELS -- EU lawmakers and member states on Friday struck a deal on rules regulating artificial intelligence (AI).

"Historic! The EU becomes the very first continent to set clear rules for the use of AI," said European Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton late Friday following the conclusion of marathon talks that began on Wednesday.

"The AI Act is much more than a rulebook -- it's a launchpad for EU startups and researchers to lead the global AI race," Breton said on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. (EU-Artificial Intelligence)

PHNOM PENH -- The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) opened its extraordinary congress at its headquarters here on Saturday to set out an action plan for 2024, said the party's honorary president Samdech Heng Samrin.

DAMASCUS -- Seven soldiers and pro-government fighters were killed on Friday during an Islamic State (IS) attack on military sites in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour, a war monitor reported early Saturday.

The assault was launched on military positions east of the T2 oil station in the southern countryside of Deir al-Zour, the latest in a series of such attacks in eastern Syria, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. (Syria-IS-Attack)

MEXICO CITY -- At least 11 people died Friday in the municipality of Texcaltitlan in the State of Mexico, as a result of a confrontation between an armed group and community residents, the state security secretariat said.

Authorities said in a statement that eight of the dead were allegedly members of the armed group, and the other three were residents. (Mexico-Armed conflict) Enditem
