GAZA -- Israeli war jets destroyed on Friday the oldest and largest mosque in the Gaza City, Palestinian security sources said.

"Al-Omari Grand Mosque, the largest and oldest mosque in the Gaza Strip, was extensively destroyed in Israeli attacks," the sources told Xinhua. (Gaza-Mosque-Israeli Strike)

UNITED NATIONS -- The United States on Friday vetoed a UN Security Council resolution demanding immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.

The resolution, drafted by the United Arab Emirates and backed by more than 100 countries, gained support from 13 of the 15 Security Council members, with Britain abstaining. (UN-Security Council-Resolution-Gaza)

DAMASCUS -- Seven soldiers and pro-government fighters were killed on Friday during an Islamic State (IS) attack on military sites in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour, a war monitor reported early Saturday.

The assault was launched on military positions east of the T2 oil station in the southern countryside of Deir al-Zour, the latest in a series of such attacks in eastern Syria, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. (Syria-IS-Attack)

BAGHDAD -- Fourteen people were killed and 18 others injured on Friday night in a fire that broke out at a residential building in the town of Soran in Erbil province in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.

A statement by the Soran health department said "the fire first broke out on the third and fourth floors, which were inhabited by university students and teachers, and then spread to the entire five-story building." (Iraq-Building Fire) Enditemn
