DHAKA, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- A High Court Division bench in Bangladesh on Monday cleared the way for the Election Commission (EC) to continue the process for holding the 12th parliamentary election slated for Jan. 7, 2024.

Also, the High Court bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Atabullah summarily rejected a writ petition that challenged the legality of announcing the schedule for the next parliament election.

Md Eunus Ali Akond, a Supreme Court lawyer, filed the petition as a public interest litigation with the High Court Division bench on Nov. 29 seeking a stay on the schedule that the EC issued for holding the election on Jan. 7 next year.

In his petition, the lawyer said the ongoing political crisis in the South Asian country is making it impossible to conduct fair elections.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) party, which rose to power with a landslide election victory in 2009 and won its second term in 2014 and third term in 2018, now eyes for the fourth consecutive victory. Enditem
