RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Corinthians have confirmed an interest in signing unsettled Flamengo and Brazil international striker Gabriel Barbosa.

The 27-year-old, known affectionately in Brazil as Gabigol, is understood to be a priority transfer target for Corinthians as manager Mano Menezes seeks to bolster his attack.

"Gabigol is a great player and would catch the interest of any club," Corinthians president Augusto Melo told Brazil's Sportv on Wednesday.

"He has the characteristics that we need so why don't we have a good conversation? We want to sit down with Flamengo and see if there is interest on both sides."

Barbosa has scored 141 goals in 253 appearances across all competitions for Flamengo since joining the Rio de Janeiro outfit from Santos in January 2019.

However, the former Inter Milan and Benfica forward has endured a wretched past year as injuries and poor form restricted him to 20 goals across all competitions in 2023. Enditem
