TOKYO, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed slightly higher on Friday as market sentiment was boosted by overnight gains in the U.S. stock market.
Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, ended up 28.58 points, or 0.09 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 33,169.05.
The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 10.45 points, or 0.45 percent, higher at 2,336.43.
While buying prevailed in the Tokyo market on Friday, gains were trimmed later in the day as investors moved to lock gains ahead of the early closure of U.S. and some European markets next week for the winter holidays.
Market watchers here also noted a strong sense of caution over the strong yen and that few investors are willing to aggressively pursue higher quotations despite the supportive performance of the U.S. stock market.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by marine transportation, bank and pulp and paper issues.
Issues that advanced outpaced those that fell by 1,268 to 353, while 38 ended the day unchanged. Enditem
