KAMPALA, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has announced plans to build a new international stadium for the east African country to host 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) football matches.
Museveni said in a televised address to the nation late on Friday that the world-class stadium will be constructed in the western district of Hoima.
He said the construction of the third stadium in Hoima to host AFCON games was selected because of its proximity to an international airport, known as Kabaale International Airport, as per one of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) requirements to host the biennial continental football competition.
He said Uganda has already two stadiums, Namboole and Nakivubo in the capital, Kampala that are close to the Entebbe International Airport.
In June, 2023, CAF awarded the joint bid of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda the hosting rights of the 2027 AFCON finals. Enditem
