BEIRUT, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- A Hezbollah fighter was killed on Tuesday in confrontations with Israeli forces on Lebanon's southern border, Lebanese military sources told Xinhua.

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Israel fired two air-to-surface missiles at a house in Lebanon's southern village of Houla, while its warplanes launched 11 airstrikes on several Lebanese villages and towns bordering Israel.

The sources added that Israeli forces fired about 100 artillery shells toward southern Lebanon, including the villages of Kfarchouba, Houla, Al-Adaysseh, Maroun al-Ras, and the town of Naqoura, among others.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah said its fighters carried out a series of attacks on a gathering of Israeli soldiers in the vicinity of the al-Marj site and other sites, including Al-Samaqa and Birkat Risha.

The Lebanon-Israel border has been witnessing rising tension since Oct. 8, 2023, after the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah fired rockets toward Israel in support of the Hamas attack on Israel the previous day, prompting Israel to respond by firing heavy artillery toward southeastern Lebanon.

The confrontations between Hezbollah and Israel have so far killed 192 people on the Lebanese side, including 137 Hezbollah members and 35 civilians, according to Lebanese security sources. Enditem
