JERUSALEM, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Israeli basketball Champions League club Hapoel Jerusalem parted company with its Serbian head coach Aleksandar Dzikic after about a year and a half on the job, according to a statement issued by the club on Thursday.

Due to the security situation in Israel, Dzikic did not return to the country after Jerusalem's win in Belgrade against Benfica Lisbon in the Champions League on Dec. 20. Consequently, he had been absent from the team's two Israeli Super League games.

"We announce the release of coach Dzikic due to personal challenges as a result of the security situation in Israel," said the club's statement. "He built an excellent, high-quality team that plays for its fans, a team that we will do everything in our power to keep together."

Dzikic, 52, who was appointed for the job in June 2022, led Jerusalem to the 2023 Champions League final game, where they lost to Germany's Telekom Bonn in May. He also won the Israel State Cup and League Cup with the team last season.

Hapoel has not yet announced the appointment of a new head coach to replace Dzikic. Enditem
