LILONGWE, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Malawian president Lazarus Chakwera has congratulated footballer Temwa Chawinga for emerging as the 2023 world's leading goalscorer in women's football, as announced by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).

The Malawi women's football star has scored 63 goals in total, with 51 for her Chinese club Wuhan Jiangda, and 12 for Malawi national team during 2023.

Chakwera described Chawinga's achievement as a showcase of her exceptional talent and dedication towards the sport.

"As the first non-European female footballer to achieve this feat, Chawinga's prowess with 51 goals for Wuhan Jiangda, her multiple awards in China, and her national team contributions in South Africa's COSAFA tournament are truly inspiring," said Chakwera in a statement dated Wednesday, Jan. 3.

The Malawi leader further described Chawinga as Malawi's pride, and that her "remarkable accomplishments are a testament to her skill and hard work".

Chawinga, 25, becomes the first African to emerge as top goalscorer after Jenni Hermoso of Spain in 2021, and Fenna Kalma, Dutch, in 2022, according to the IFFHS, which started score ranking in women football in 2021.

International media reported that Chawinga has scored more goals in the year 2023 than any other male player in the world.

According to the U.S.' Kansas City Current, Chawinga will be signed to a two-year contract through the 2025 season on free transfer from Wuhan Jiangda, following the expiry of her current contract. Enditem
