ATHENS, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- The number of cruise passengers welcomed at Greece's Piraeus port in 2023 hit historic record highs, it was announced on Thursday.

According to preliminary figures released by Greece's Piraeus Port Authority S.A. (PPA S.A.), which runs the country's largest port, the total number of passengers was approximately 1.5 million compared to 880,000 in 2022. Regarding the homeport section, approximately 800,000 passengers reached Piraeus last year up from 380,000 in 2022.

The number of cruise ships served during 2023 was 760, including 525 homeports, according to PPA's figures.

Based on the pre-bookings data, the cruise industry at the port sees a momentum also in 2024. Already pre-bookings have been made for 1,042 arrivals, with a big increase and an expected new record in homeport arrivals (approximately 800 calls) in the new year.

China's COSCO Shipping acquired the majority of PPA's shares in 2016 after an international tender. Enditem
